A Walking Guide to the Boardwalk's Landmarks

What's actually worth the walk along Atlantic City's famous Boardwalk, mapped out block by block.

The Boardwalk runs for miles, and not every stretch is worth the same amount of time. Here's how our concierge desk routes first-time guests who ask for a self-guided walk, starting from our block and working outward in both directions.

Start With the Piers

Atlantic City's historic amusement piers are the easiest orientation point — even if you're not stopping to ride anything, walking the length of one gives you a sense of scale for the rest of the Boardwalk. Go early if you want photos without a crowd in every frame; go at dusk if you want the lights.

The People-Watching Stretch

The busiest midday stretch runs through the casino district, where the rolling chairs, the salt water taffy shops, and the buskers all cluster together. It's not the quietest walk, but it's the one most guests remember afterward.

The Quieter North End

Head north past the main casino cluster and the crowd thins out fast. This stretch is where locals actually walk their dogs and run in the mornings — wider views of the ocean, fewer souvenir shops, and a noticeably calmer pace.

Our front desk gets asked constantly where to see the ocean without a crowd in the shot — the north end past the piers is almost always the answer.

Absecon Lighthouse

A short walk or rideshare from the Boardwalk's north end, the lighthouse is one of the oldest in New Jersey and worth the climb on a clear day for the view back down the coastline toward the resort district.

Timing It Right

Sunrise walks are quiet and cool even in July. Sunset walks get the best light but the most foot traffic. If photography is the goal, weekday mornings beat weekend evenings by a wide margin.

The Takeaway

You can walk the Boardwalk's highlights in under two hours if you're efficient, or stretch it into a full morning with stops. Either way, starting from our block and heading north toward the lighthouse tends to be the route guests rate highest afterward.
